Condemn the arrest of labor activists in Iran!
All detainees must be released immediately and unconditionally!

The Islamic Republic of Iran has begun a new round of assault on the labor activists and labor leaders during the past few days.

- At 2 PM, Saturday, 27 December, Mr. Ebrahim Madadi, Vice-President of the Syndicate of Greater Tehran Bus Transportation Company (Sherkat-e Vaahed) was arrested by plain-clothes Intelligence agents accompanied by police officers. He was transported to an unknown place. His whereabouts remain unknown despite widespread searches carried out by the members of the Syndicate.

- On Monday, 22 December, Security/Intelligence department of Iran Khodro automobile factory arrested Mr. Bijan Amiri, member of the Coordinating Committee to Found Workers Organizations, and turned him in to the Intelligence forces. On the same night his house was raided by the government agents, as a result of which his guest, Mr. Mohsen Hakimi, member of the Iranian Authors Association and member of the Coordinating Committee, was also arrested. Mr. Hakimi’s family and lawyer have informed the media that he and Bijan Amiri are currently being held in Ward 209 of Evin Prison.

- As the Association for Defense of Political Prisoners and Human Rights has reported to Internet sites, on Tuesday, 23 December, the Intelligence agents of Kurdistan arrested Mr. Bakhtiyaar Rahimi and took him to an unknown spot. Mr. Rahimi was arrested also last year, spent a few months in jail. It has not been a long time since he was released from his previous imprisonment.

- On Wednesday, 24 December, Intelligence agents raided the house of another member of the Coordination Committee, Mr. Pedraam Nasrollaahi, arrested him, and took away some of items of his personal property. According to the same source, the Ministry of Intelligence has begun persecuting a number of other labor activists through, among other things, calling their families, asking them to refer to the Intelligence offices of their places of residence.

Meanwhile six members of the Syndicate of Sherkat-e Vaahed, namely Messrs. Yaghoob Salimi, Said Toraabiyaan, Ataa Baabaakhaani, Ali Zaadehoseyn, Abbaas Najandkoodaki and Davood Razavi, have just recently received jail sentences of 6 to 14 months, and Mansoor Osaanloo, the President of the Syndicate, has been in prison for the past 18 months. Also, on December 20th, five Executive Board members of Haft Tappe Sugarcane Complex Workers Syndicate, namely Messrs. Ali Nejaati, Fereydoon Nikoofard, Ghorbaan Alipoor, Jalil Ahmadi and Mohammad Heydarimehr, went on trial in the city of Dezfool, and are now awaiting their sentencing.

These arrests, trumped up charges and sham trials take place at a time when we witness the ever expanding protest movement in the society at large, especially by the workers, who increasingly and emphatically demand their right to organize and to a decent standards of living.

The recent arrests have met immediate international response. International Transport Workers’ Federation issued a statement on 27 December, protesting the arrest of Ebrahim Madadi and other labor activists. Also, Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Britain condemned the arrest of Ebrahim Madadi and Mohsen Hakimi.

Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (CFPP) vehemently condemns the arrest of Ebrahim Madadi, Bijan Amiri, Mohsen Hakimi, Bakhtiyaar Rahimi and Pedraam Nasrollaahi, and demands they, as well as all other political prisoners, be immediate and unconditionally released. CFPP demands that all prison sentences for Sherkat-e Vaahed Syndicate members be overturned. CFPP also demands that all trumped up charges against Haft Tappe workers be dropped immediately and unconditionally.

CFPP calls on all the people, especially the workers, across the world to unite in struggle against the murderous Islamic regime to free the detained labor activists and leaders, as well as all political prisoners, in Iran. CFPP expects all humanist and freedom-loving organizations around the world to strongly condemn the recent arrests while, at the same time, take urgent action to ensure the immediate freedom of the detainees as well as the immediate cessation of persecution of labor activists by the regime.
