ANOTHER CRIME BY THE ISLAMIC REGIME IN IRAN
Seventeen years’ imprisonment for attending a commemoration ceremony!
From: Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners
To: Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and all humanist organizations around the world
The regime of Islamic Republic in Iran has handed down heavy prison sentences for a number of people on the charge of participation in the commemoration ceremony of the massacre of political prisoners in 1981. The ceremony was held at Khaavaraan cemetery where the victims are buried in mass graves.
The sentencing came after the detainees, Mohammad-Ali Mansuri, Ali Saaremi, Misaaq Yazdaannezhaad, Mohsen Naaderi and Hamide Nabavi, members of the victims’ families, had been tortured in jail for months. This onslaught of the regime on the families of the victims of its crimes should be condemned most widely and vehemently.
- Mohammad-Ali Mansuri was arrested on Sept. 1, 2007, two days after the commemoration and put under intensive physical and psychological torture. On Oct. 4, 2008, after 13 months in jail, he was sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment on trumped up charges. His family’s efforts aimed at finding out about his condition only led to the detention of another family member!
- Ali Saaremi was arrested on Oct. 5, 2007, and spent 7 months in a solitary cell while being intensely tortured. He remains in jail. However, on Oct. 22, 2008, the Revolutionary Islamic Court changed his previous charge of participation in Khaavaraan ceremony, but has not yet announced his new charge. He is expected to receive a heavy imprisonment sentence.
- Misaaq Yazdaannezhaad, a 22-year-old student, was arrested on the same charge of participation in Khaavaraan ceremony on Sept. 9, 2007, and remains in limbo.
Mohsen Naaderi was arrested on Sept. 9, 2007, and sentenced to 1 year in prison at a summary trial. We are in receipt of reports stating that his family are now enduring severe hardships.
- Mrs. Hamide Nabavi, a mother of five, was arrested on the same charge and transported to the notorious Evin prison. Her five-year-old child, who witnessed the barbaric assault of the regime’s thugs on her mother in the process of her being transported to a solitary cell, is now suffering from a post-traumatic anxiety disorder.
The heavy jail sentences for the families of the victims of the massacre of 1981 on the charge of participation in the commemoration ceremony of their loved ones is an expression of the regime’s deep apprehension at the society’s crying out openly against that its horrendous crime. It is, however, also a brazenness that should not go unanswered.
Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners calls on all human rights organizations, all humanist personalities and institutions, and all freedom-loving people around the world to protest as extensively as possible the described treatment by the regime of the families of its crimes as well as inhuman jail sentences for them. Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners particularly requests Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch to take urgent action in their case.
Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners demands the immediate and unconditional release of all Khaavaraan detainees along with all other political prisoners in Iran.
